UHT MILK SAVES CELLS ON TEETH
THAT HAVE BEEN KNOCKED OUT
Australia -Ultra High Temperature (UTH) treated milk may soon
join bandages, painkillers and antiseptic as a first aid necessity in keeping cells alive
on teeth that have been knocked -out. A recent finding by the University of Queensland (U
Q) has proven it to be the best Practical medium for this purpose. In a three -year study,
Associate professor Laurence walsh from UQ,s School of Dentistry and former student Mr Tim
Smith conducted comprehensive Laboratory trials on a range of tooth preservation
solutions. These included over the counter emergency tooth preservation products
(saline-and glucose-based), standard and enhanced laboratory growth mediums , solutions
used to store organs for transplants and UHT milk. The researchers tested the
effectiveness of the various media for preserving teeth over periods oftime-six,24,48 and
72 hours-temperatures of4C(refrigerator)22C(room)and37C(body)
Best practical choice
They found that while laboratory growth media were the best
overall for keeping cells from the root surface alive, UHT milk was the best practical
choice for short -term emergency preservation because it was affordable available .UHT
milk performed better than commercial products. It was also found to be better than
regular milk as it could be stored at room temperature for longer periods. Milk is a good
medium for storing knocked out teeth because cells from the root surface do not swell up
and burst as they do when placed in water It contains proteins which keep a constant acid
to alkaline ratio, antibacterial substances as well as sugars to keep cells growing Prop

From Memory Lane
Some event stands out in one's life and their
memory lasts for long time, far distant from timings of those events. I narrate some of
those encountered in early days of my army life-interesting and humorous.
After my graduation in dentistry in 1940 from de
-montorency College of Dentistry, Lahore, I along with two other Colleagues - RAVI DOGRA
and WARDEV SINGH were serving as demonstrators in our Alma-meter. I was assistant to other
Professors - Dr. Marshal Dey, the Principal, and my colleagues were assistant to other
Professors - Dr. M. L. Watts, and Dr. U. S. Mallick.
It was early 1941, when one day, Dr. Mahmood,
who had returned from abroad after obtaining his degree in dentistry visited the college
and met us. Amongst other things, he remarked that dental profession abroad has so much
advanced, that over there dental prosthesis (artificial dentures) were provided to
patients without their actually visiting the dental clinics. Patients send their
photographs to dental surgeons, and artificial dentures are provided to them, and that he
would describe the technique sometimes. We were very much amazed and impressed. Even I
asked the principal, if that could be done. He simply laughed.
On subsequent visits of Dr. Mahmood, we kept
asking him when would he teach us that technique, but he kept saying "next
time". After this having repeated a few times, we concluded that he was telling us a
yarn. To out do him, we also decided to tell him something more that his tall talk.
So on his next visit, I told him, that our
principal has told us even better method. The patient would not send us his photograph,
but write us a letter, giving his age etc. and we would send him the denture by Post. He
saw through this joke, and never told us such yarns thereafter.
Dr. Mahmood later migrated to PAKISTAN, after
division of the country, and achieved the status of Director Dental services over there.

Killer Lions and Toothaches

Could a toothache drive a lion to attack
and eat a human? It may be. Zoologist Bruce Patterson and Ellis Neiburger, a dentist from
Waukegan, Illinois, recently presented a report on tooth problems that may have forced
lions to switch to an unusual source of food.
In 1898, two male lions devoured over 130
construction workers as they were building a bridge over the Tsavo River in Southeast
Kenya. In 1991, a lion killed six people in Mfuwe, close to Zambia's Luangwa Valley. But
why?
Each of the lions showed evidence of tooth or
jaw problems. One of the Tsavo lions was missing three teeth in a row, and had a broken
lower canine with a large root-tip abscess. His upper canine had been displaced to such an
awkward, dysfunctional position that it had impaired his ability to capture large,
vigorous prey. The other Tsavo had a fractured tooth, while the Mfuwe lion appeared to
have a chronic jaw infection.
So why go after humans? Patterson and Neiburger
presented these findings at the annual meeting of the American Society of Mammalogists,
explaining that lions turn to humans for food when a chronic injury stops them from
chasing fast-moving prey such as zebras and gazelles. Paterson said "humans are easy
prey. We're slow, we don't hear very well, and we don't see in the dark." The Field
Museum in Chicago now owns all three of the deadly carnivores, whose bodies have been
preserved for further research. - J.M.D.

DIAMOND JUBILEE YEAR
MESSAGE FROM PATRON
- I am glad that ADCROA is celebrating the deferred Diamond Anniversary of the Army Dental Corps on October 14, 2001.
- 01 Feb 1941 was a red letter day in the history of the Indian Defence Forces as well as the Dental profession in India. On that day seven Dental surgeons joined the newly constituted Dental Branch of the
IMS, to start a dental service for the Indian personnel of the Defence Forces in the country.
- As I think of that day I am reminded of the seven pioneers of the Corps. Of them
Mahmud, Nazir and Qureshi went to Pakistan in 1947. Sethi left the
Army in 1946 and joined the civil Dental service in Dhanbad. He died a few years ago after an illustrious career and very lucrative practice. I lost contact with
Aratoon. Joginder left the Army in 1943. He had a very successful career in Punjab, retiring as Principal of the Dental College in
Patiala. Many of his students had a successful career in the Army Dental Corps. He is alive and kicking in
Patiala. I had the good fortune of continuing in the Army and heading the service during its formative years, retiring in October 1971.
- It is gratifying to see that the service we started with foot engines, field chairs and EI spittoons in make shift accommodation has grown into most sophisticated service with the latest equipment and housed in specially built Dental Centres with all modern facilities. The Dental Corps. Personnel have continued to enhance their knowledge and skill in keeping with the advances made in the profession. We of the yester-years can well be proud of the achievements and are happy to see that the seed sown 60 yrs ago has grown into a blossoming tree. This has been possible due to the contribution of each and every member of the Corps, Officers, JCOs and Men throughout this period. My heartiest congratulations to all serving and retired personnel.
- As we celebrate the end of sixty years of our triumphant existence, I wish the service continued prosperity. Good luck, good health and good cheer to all personnel of the Dental Corps and their families.
- May we continue to progress and render sustained, dedicated service to the nation at large and the Armed Forces in particular.
- Let us keep everybody BITING FIT.
